Banyan 5-PATH® Induction (About 380 Words)

Take in a deep breath, let it out, close your eyes and begin to relax.

Now push down with your hands, pressing… Good now stop pressing – release and relax 1, 2, 3. Now send that feeling of relaxation through your entire body, from your hands and arms to your chest, from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet, 1, 2, 3. Now I’m going to lift your right hand and drop it, let it be heavy with relaxation. (Drop it.) Deeper, go deeper, deeper, relaxed.

Once again – push down, pressing… Good, stop pressing, release and relax 1,2,3. Send that feeling of relaxation through your entire body, 1, 2, 3. And, now I lift your hand and drop it. (Drop it.) Deeper, go much deeper.

Now I’m going to gently rock your head… (Rocking head.) Relax your neck, face, jaw, relax and now send that feeling of relaxation all the way down to your feet, 1, 2, 3. (Stop rocking head.)

In a moment I’m going to have you repeat the words “deeper relaxed” out loud, saying them softly and slowly, putting about half the amount of effort into each repetition.
After each repetition I’ll say the words “relaxing more and more, fading away to nothing, nothing, nothing.”

After a few repetitions you can relax mentally and easily fade those words away and forget about them for now. When you’ve done that raise your right index finger to let me know how well you are doing. (Touch finger.)

Now begin repeating “deeper relaxed” out loud and easily relax those words away and forget about them for now. Begin.
(Client says “deeper relaxed” and you say “relaxing more and more, fading away to nothing, nothing, nothing.” until they have faded away.)

Good, now go deeper, and as I count from one down to five let it be as if you could double this mental and physical relaxation.

One, relaxing much further.
Two, relaxing more and more with each breath that you exhale.
Three, feeling safe, secure and attending only to the sound of my voice.
Four, deeper and deeper relaxed, as if all you care about now is how much deeper you can go.
Five, as your body relaxes, your mind relaxes and your body relaxes much further.

Suggestions & Considerations When Using the 5-PATH® Induction:

  1. Rehearse this induction so that when you use it on a client you can read it and not sound like you are reading it.

  2. Listen to the audio provided as an example of how the induction should be delivered. Pay close attention to tone and speed.

  3. In some situations clients may benefit from some instructions about where to press down before you start the induction. Not all clients need this additional instruction, in fact most don’t. But you could say, ‘We are going to start off by having you push down on the arms of the chair (or on your lap) and then I’ll have you stop pressing and release. This can really help you to relax.’” I prefer to just tell my clients to start off with their hands and arms on the arms of the chair. Then no additional instructions are necessary unless you are doing a demo and the hypnotic subject is standing. Then instruct the subject to put their hands on the front of their legs, and then just proceed as usual.

  4. For older clients or clients that you believe may have difficulties understanding the induction discuss with them the part where they repeat the words “deeper relaxed”.That might go something like, “During the hypnosis session, we like to help folks feel really relaxed. There will come a time where I will have you say “deeper relaxed”repeatedly as I give you suggestions to help you relax.”

    You could even take a minute to have them practice it, have them say “deeper relaxed” and you say “relaxing more and more, fading away to nothing, nothing, nothing.”

    DON’T do this with every client! Just do this with the folks that you think would benefit from this special kind of instructions and practice. This is all part Phase I, Preparation, Testing and Convincing.

  5. Sometimes your client may only say “deeper relaxed” as many as one or two times and stop talking. Don’t worry, she has probably either gone into somnambulism or aphasia. This is a good thing! If this is the case just say, “relaxing more and more, fading away to nothing, nothing, nothing” as you normally would. Wait a few seconds do it again, and remind her to raise her finger to let you know how well she is doing.

  6. There is an “advanced” version of this induction that I like to use. In the induction where you pick up your client’s hand and say, “(Drop it.) Deeper, go deeper, deeper, relaxed” I like to use the word sleep after dropping the hand. This is like a nested instant induction that works like very fast deepener. This is what it would look like, “(Drop it.) Sleep, go deeper, deeper, relaxed”.
